Subject: AE42 vs: AE44
|
What are the main differences between AE42 and AE44? Also what does the 42 and 44 signify?

The main difference between the two is approximately 2 mass percent mischmetal. AE42 is a magnesium alloy with nominal alloy additions of 4 mass percent aluminium and 2 mass percent mischmetal, while AE44 is 4% Al and 4% mischmetal.

AE44 is being considered in many applications as a good mix for a low creep alloy which also is good to cast. AE42 tends to have less advantages for low creep but slightly better on manufacturability. Some papers on this you may find at meridian-mag.com website

sorry, that is the other way aound. AE42 has a slightly better creep property, but not good for manufacturability. Apologies

AE44 has better creep behavior than AE42 due to the addition of extra mischmetal. The rare earth elements in mischmetal (cerium, lanthanum, etc.) react with aluminium to form an intermetallic compound at the grain boundaries. This microstructure is more stable at high temperatures, which improves creep performance.

both alloys have low room temp. performance and a castability is no great.

 Hi German,
where did you get this info from? Are you familiar with AE alloys? Could you give me more details?

Both alloys has TYS in range of 130-140MPa
Bad castability in terms of stickings.
Chemical stability of AE44 is not good, you stirring after remelting to receive RE.
If you have interest in alternative alloy with much better performance, please let me know.
