 Great question! It depends on so many things, most importantly the technology you choose and the source of power you have.
A nice summary is that by Sujit Das (\"Primary Magnesium Production Costs for Automotive Applications\") in last November\'s JOM. His (raw) figures are:
1. Electrolytic in the West (e.g. USA): US$1.41/lb, of which US$0.55 /lb is capital;
2. Thermal (i.e. Pidgeon) in the West: US$1.31/lb, of which US$0.33 /lb is capital;
3. Thermal in China: US$1.11 /lb, of which US$0.21 is capital.
Das added Carbothermic (which I\'m working on): US$0.83 /lb, of which US$0.18 /lb is capital. He suggests that SOM technology (Solid Oxide Membrane) will be even cheaper, but I\'m not familiar with its stage of development.
