Dec 25.17 Forged Wheel Advantages for Automotive Performance Sport/Luxury Sport, and SUV Applications
Sport and performance car enthusiasts are now beginning to understand what both amateur and professional racers have known for years……..that on the race track, forged wheels deliver significantly better performance and are much safer than cast wheels. What this means for luxury, sport and performance car drivers is that lighter, stronger forged wheels offer both a higher margin of safety and improved vehicle performance and dynamics out on the road. Because forged wheels are much stronger than cast wheels, they can be designed with thinner cross-sections, making them lighter in weight and better optimized for rotational mass and inertial moment considerations.

Marks Lisnanskis, President of Magnesium.com notes that, “Wheel weight is vital to overall performance as it is a key component in “un-sprung” vehicle mass. By virtue of these lighter wheels, forged wheels are at least 20% lighter, sustaining equal loads with better characteristics, which is always easier on the car and its suspension. Lighter wheels also yield shorter breaking distance, which saves lives, shorter acceleration and reduces fuel consumption.”

Because forged automotive wheels are manufactured by applying extremely high forces to aluminum or magnesium base materials, wheel pre-forms undergo beneficial metallurgical changes to grain structure during the forging process. The metallurgical microstructure in forged wheels becomes more organized as the base material flows and is aligned under pressure. This makes the wheel stronger than the more random grain structure found in cast wheels.

Forged wheel metallurgical grain structure can be further oriented in the forging process to provide the highest material strengths exactly where the wheel loading is at the highest levels. High load conditions in wheels arise principally from factors such as road surface hazards or from lateral and other loads generated by the vehicles own inertia. Today’s advanced computer aided modeling techniques allow the wheel manufacturer and the automaker to collaborate in optimizing a specific forged wheel geometry and design for the utmost strength and safety on the vehicle.

Another important feature of forged wheels over low-pressure cast wheels is the integrity of surface finish achievable. Most final wheel styles and finish combinations are enhanced by the density and uniformity of cosmetic surfaces on forged wheels. This is an advantage on higher end applications where a bright wheel finish is desired but chrome plating is not viable due to mass, cost and environmental considerations. Beautifully polished forged wheels provide a dramatic yet refined addition to vehicle appearance and aesthetics.
